Choosing
between Black & White, Sepia Tone or Color wedding photography can
be a challenge, as there are many factors to consider |
|
|
|
B&W
Many couples will choose this
popular format for wedding photography. I believe the reason
for Black & White
popularity is that it adds a timely essence, which provides a classic
view of the wedding. That said, I often suggest adding one roll
of color film to a B&W photo package as it can also add a second
dimension to the photography
Sepia Tone
Sometimes, people who choose
to have their wedding photographs done in B&W decide to go with a Sepia
Tone. The Sepia Tone gives the image a slight "brownish" tone
which makes the photos look a little richer and older. The cost of
having the images done in this tone is about the same price as B&W
Color
Since the mid sixties wedding
photos were often photographed in color. Color wedding photography
is more challenging than B&W and many photographers will steer
the client to B&W because of its difficulty. For this reason,
having a proficient photographer is essential when photographing in
color. Another issue
with color photography is the life span of the prints. This has
been an issue in the past, but professional photographers who choose
to use
the very best color paper can now expect 100 years in home display
and up to 200 years in dark storage |

| Photojournalistic,Traditional,
Artistic or Portrait Style Weddings? |
|
Photographic
style is an important factor in today’s wedding photography. As
photographs themselves are a documentation of events, it is important
to choose a correct style of photography. |
|
| |
|
|
|
Photojournalism
Style Wedding
The latest trend in wedding photography
is photojournalism. Photojournalistic wedding photos offer a more
lively or personal view of the events, such as guests greeting each
other with a hug, bridesmaids fussing over the dress or the guests
running
to keep out of the rain. Subjects in these photos will have
an un-posed appearance, as the idea is to create a story of events
Authentic Photojournalism
When
there are no directions given from a photographer to the subjects. A photographer
is in the background just recording events, without any interaction
with the subject. The
aim is to have as natural photos as possible. A problem with
this purist type of photography is that if a wedding is not overly
flamboyant,
the photos may come across as uneventful. However this type of
photography is well suited to capture out of the ordinary events
I generally believe in the balanced approach to photojournalism,
by including some posed photos of the bride and groom along
with some posed photos
of the bridal party and family. Following this, I then put less emphasis
on the structured formal shots, as my aim is in the telling of the
story

Traditional
Style Wedding
Traditional wedding photography has been around
since weddings were first photographed, and is still very popular. This
technique is what I call the "usual" or "most common" wedding
photography type.
In the traditional approach photographs are most often shot
in color. Normally
a soft focus is used for facial portraits. Group posed
photos of a bridal party and family are done in either a pyramid
shape or straight line. Along with portraits, a large number
of planned and informal wedding shots are taken

|
| |
 |
Impressionistic
Style Wedding
Impressionistic wedding
photos can be photographed in Black & White and / or color. The
posing is less structured and more artistic. Shots are
like still photos from a movie or film and tell a story. |

| Medium
format vs 35 mm Format for weddingst |
|
At
Wedding Photos 4 u, we offer medium format that is shot using the
Hasselblad, and 35mm format that is shot using the Nikon. This
said, we always suggest a 35mm Nikon format as the use of medium format
camera for weddings is very rare, and poses some problems.
|
|
|
|
Medium
Format Hasselblad
A problem with a medium format
is the negatives are very large, thus producing extremely sharp images. This
in turn produces photos that are too real looking and very unforgiving. To
truly make use of this type of format, a wedding would have to
be staged, which would
disrupt the entire wedding. All shots would have to be carefully
planned just as if one were in a studio.
A second problem with
medium format is cost, as this type of photography is
a specialty item. Cost of negatives, processing and prints
are extremely high. Having extra prints made for relatives and
guests would be an expensive option.
Medium format
Cameras are not as versatile as 35mm Nikons. As medium
format involves a lot of set up time, a photographer loses a lot
of mobility to move around and concentrate on the wedding.

The
35mm Nikon Format
For wedding photography I prefer using a
35mm Nikon format. I have found
that the ease of Nikon produces better wedding photos. This versatility
allows for a far better range of photos, meaning I can put more effort
into capturing the flow of a wedding.
I enjoy working with
35mm Nikons, as they produce photos that have a very natural look
and feel.
35mm format quality
is superb when using professional equipment and film. The
cost of 35mm professional film and paper is expensive but worth it, when
one factors in a natural appearance, costs and flexibility. A
better range of photography is provided with a 35 mm Nikon format.
